What makes best surfboards for beginners different?

Good question! The best surfboards for beginners are designed to get you up and running as quickly and safely as possible. For starters, they usually offer more buoyancy than more advanced boards. That fact alone will come in handy when you're learning and making a lot of mistakes. They also tend to be bigger and have a softer top. All things you're going to want in a surfboard while you're learning the ropes.

You may be tempted to jump straight into an intermediate or advanced surfboard, and it's still possible to learn on one. But I really wouldn't recommend it. You're going to have a much easier time of things if you stick to a surfboard specifically designed for beginners.

  • You'll want to take a few things into consideration when you're choosing your first board. Here are just a few.
  • How big are the waves where you plan to learn?
  • How big does your board need to be? Your size and weight need to be "compatible" with your board.
  • Understand how important volume is.You also need to think about the weight and volume of your board. Personally, I prefer foam surfboards.
  • What's your style like? Try to find a board that looks cool to you. Nobody wants to be stuck with something they don't like, right?
  • Other things to consider:

How often do you plan to surf? How much money do you have to invest in this hobby? Do you have friends or an instructor that will be helping you learn? If so, a slightly more advanced board may be ok.

This is a nice, tough surfboard that's perfect for beginners and intermediate surfers. The price tag is on the lower end of the spectrum and it weighs in at around 17 pounds. It comes in a variety of shapes and styles, so it shouldn't be too hard to find one you like.

Actual prices will vary depending on the style you choose, but this is a great board to get you started for less than $500. That's not a bad price at all when you consider that the BIC Sports DURA-TEC Surfboard also comes equipped with a built-in traction pad, nose guard, and fins at no additional cost.

This is a great, budget-friendly best surfboards for beginners to get their feet wet with.

Can I use an ankle leash with this surfboard?

Yes. The board does not come with a leash included, but any standard leash will work just fine.

Does this board have a soft top?

No. Still, it's a great surfboard for the price considering everything else it does come with.

This board comes in different shapes. Does that matter?

It can. Different shapes will handle differently and you'll probably want to get a feel for what you like best before making a final decision.

It doesn't get much more affordable than this. I love pretty much everything this board has to offer for right around $300. This board measures in at 60" long, 20" wide, and 2" thick and comes included with a set of double fins. This provides beginner surfers with a nice wide surface and lots of stability.

The entire surface is a soft, comfortable foam that makes learning to surf a breeze. That low $300 price tag also comes along with a five-foot ankle leash included. The best part? It also doubles as a wakeboard.

There's a lot of bang for your buck in this board if you're looking for an entry-level, super affordable option.

Can I use an ankle leash with this board?

Yes. In fact, it comes with one included!

Why does it come with two fins?

Fins are used to provide stability, so the answer to this question is pretty easy. Double the fins, means double the stability.

This one's a bit different. While it's not technically a surfboard, the fact that it's inflatable gives it enough bulk to make learning easy without sacrificing buoyancy. It also makes for a nice, soft top and has built-in traction pads all across the top surface.

This board is on the higher end of the price spectrum in terms of beginner surfboards, but you definitely get what you pay for. This is one of my top choices for beginners. It's going to come in at around $540.

    What makes this board special?

One of the things I really like about this particular surfboard is that it includes utility tie downs to keep your gear safe while you're out on the waves.

    What's the weight limit?

This board can hold up to 270lbs.

The Heritage comes in a variety of colours, so you should definitely find something to match your style here. This is a longboard so you'll want to be a bit more confident in your abilities, but it does have a soft top so it's pretty good for beginners to learn on.

It comes with quite a bit for the price tag, which ranges somewhere between $325 and $410. If you've got a bit more money to work with, this is a great option.

    What else comes included?

A 9' ankle leash and a set of three fins.

This is definitely one of my favourites. The great price tag (between $270 and $340), nice wide soft top surface and triplefins on the bottom. You really can't go wrong here. The Verve comes with an 8' ankle leash included and the fins are super easy to attach.

The Verve is one of my favourite best surfboards for beginners.

    Why three fins?

Fins offer stability out on the waves. Triplefins mean triple stability. Perfect for beginners!

There's a lot for you to consider before you get out on the waves and start learning (if you haven't already.) The best advice I can give you is to feel things out and see what works and feels best for you. Everybody has different preferences, so there's no one right board for everybody.

I've listed what I personally believe to be the best surfboards for beginners. You won't know for sure until you try one out for yourself, but hopefully, you've got enough to think about to start making an informed decision. If you try one of my favourites, I'm willing to bet you'll find something that works for you.
