What makes best surfboards for beginners different?

Good question! The best surfboards for beginners are designed to get you up and running as quickly and safely as possible. For starters, they usually offer more buoyancy than more advanced boards. That fact alone will come in handy when you’re learning and making a lot of mistakes. They also tend to be bigger and have a softer top. All things you’re going to want in a surfboard while you’re learning the ropes.

You may be tempted to jump straight into an intermediate or advanced surfboard, and it’s still possible to learn on one. But I really wouldn’t recommend it. You’re going to have a much easier time of things if you stick to a surfboard specifically designed for beginners.

Other things to consider:

How often do you plan to surf? How much money do you have to invest in this hobby? Do you have friends or an instructor that will be helping you learn? If so, a slightly more advanced board may be ok.
